Bentleigh is located at the northern end of the Centre Road level crossing, which also provides station access.
The station consists of an island layout and side platform; Platform's 1 & 2 (island platform) consists of a large brick building housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets, while platform 3 consists of a smaller brick building. A large Metcard ticket vending machine is located inside the waiting area, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. Additional coin-only Metcard and myki ticket vending machines are located inside the waiting area on the island platform, and at the entrance to platform 3.
Bentleigh station opened on 19 December 1881 as East Brighton. It was renamed Bentleigh in 1907.[1]
In 1998 Bentleigh station was upgraded to a Premium Station.[2] Previous to the works, Bentleigh closely resembled McKinnon station. At this time, the underpass was also filled in.
In 2006, the station had the pedestrian level crossing upgraded as part of the VicTrack trial of new crossing technology. The upgrades were fully operational by September 2006, and were monitored for six months to assess changes in pedestrian behaviour.[3] The emergency exits from the crossing were replaced with locking gates 1.5 metres high, and that only be opened from one side.[4] Additional warning devices were also fitted with the common 'red pedestrian' sign, as well as an LED light box saying "Another Train Coming" which is lit when, either an express train is bound on the DOWN line, or when a train is expected after another train on the UP line.[5]
